DIPLOMA IN ACOUSTICS AND NOISE CONTROL

We are very proud of our colleague Aoife Kelly who not only passed her diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control but was also awarded best performing student in Ireland. Her project on Speech Intelligibility has also been put forward for an award in the UK.

SHORT-TERM NOISE MONITORING WITH DELTA

DELTA - one of the leading acoustical consultant companies in Denmark - accepted a project to measure airport noise. Making actual noise measurements and calculating how changes in air traffic affect the propagation of noise can be time consuming and expensive.

DELTA needed a ready-to-use system that could perform the necessary measurements and store the heavy data load until the project had finished. DELTA decided to take up a subscription to B&K’s Noise Sentinel On Demand service.

Noise Sentinel On Demand is a noise monitoring service that includes all the necessary hardware to complete the job.

For this project, two terminals were required for continuous noise measurement every second, for three months. Connected to mains power on site, the noise monitoring terminals ensured continuous measurement throughout the three-month period and consultant could follow the noise from his office.



FLYING EUROFIGHTER NOISE MAPPED BY BRUEL & KJAER

Airbus Defence and Space and B&K have successfully completed noise measurements on the Eurofighter jet, to calculate its on-ground noise exposure under different thrust and flight configurations.

The noise measurements were made by repeatedly flying the jet over a B&K data acquisition system collecting data from a 29m diameter array of microphones laid out on the ground.

The researchers from the joint project will now use the data to build a complex software model of the fighter jet’s acoustic emissions.

The purpose of this sound model is to plan take-off and landing flight paths that generate minimal acoustic disturbance for the local communities around airports used by the Eurofighter. This will enable Airbus Defence and Space to design low-noise flight paths, where the jet emits noise away from populated areas.

CHOOSE UP TO THREE AXES WITH TOUGH NEW ACCELEROMETERS

B&K has created a new family of robust triaxial accelerometers for vibration measurements in harsh industrial environments. Designed as a replacement for Type 4506 model, the Type 4529 family has a tougher design and wider frequency range.

They are nine times less sensitive to temperature fluctuations and 20 times less sensitive to base bending.

Type 4529 has a range of mounting surfaces and a selection of clips, helping engineers to save on set‐up time and ensure accelerometers are correctly attached. These enhancements make the Type 4529 suitable for use within a variety of application tests. 


 

ACCELERATED VEHICLE VIBRATION MEASUREMENTS

To make triaxial measurements easier for automotive and industrial engineers, B&K has created a new high-temperature charge accelerometer, which enables fast and reliable high temperature tests.With an operational temperature up to +230°C, the accelerometer is ideal for measuring within applications that generate intense heat. 



BOBCAT'S STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS GETS ITS MACHINES PURRING

Global construction equipment specialist Bobcat has reduced the effects of vibration on operators of tracked vehicles, with a complete structural analysis system for assessing and improving its vehicle design.

In recent years, the company’s compact track loader posed a unique challenge to user comfort due to vibration from the metal tracks it runs on. To improve operator comfort, Bobcat’s engineers approached B&K to improve their understanding of vibration by assessing its causes and transmission.

B&K worked to create a system for Bobcat to assess the structure of an entire vehicle and use the results to improve the design of its machines. The system consists of a 40-channel data acquisition and analysis system, accelerometers, and PULSE Reflex™ post-processing software. 


  

SPEEDY TRANSDUCER SETUP WITH APP AND 2D BARCODES

Setting up transducers for sound and vibration measurements is a much simpler process for engineers with B&K’s new smart transducer setup concept. B&K’s Transducer Smart Setup app speeds this process up, removes the need to trace cables and simplifies it to reduce input errors.

The app scans the transducer using the smartphone’s camera, which it uses to recognize the accelerometer, its location and its orientation. It then automatically synchronizes this information with the measurement software, this can save hours. 



NEW STANDARD FOR 1/1- AND 1/3-OCTAV FILTERS

New standard for 1/1- and 1/3-octave filters. Owners of Types 2250-L, 2250 and 2270 can install a free upgrade of the instrument software to meet the latest version. 


 

NOISE MAPPING AND PREDICTION TO THE LATEST STANDARDS

B&K announced new enhancements to Predictor-LIMA, its powerful and intuitive noise mapping and prediction software. “Acousticians are looking for cost-effective ways to meet industry standards and improve their noise calculation processes. Predictor-LIMA’s update combines noise calculation enhancements with standards compliance to help customers more easily create trusted noise maps” – said Predictor Lima Product manager.


 

AIM, SHOOT AND MEASURE NOISE

The acoustic camera from B&K is a complete kit for real-time noise source identification and data recording that has been designed to be up and running in 20 seconds. It makes it easy to identify and measure non-stationary noise events in areas such as aircraft cabins, cargo bays, and passenger vehicles. The acoustic camera gives an instant sound map of the object that it is focused on. 


 

GUANGZHOU BAIYUN AIRPORT SELECTS ANOMS NOISE MONITORING

B&K announced that Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (GBIA) will implement ANOMS as a key component of its expansion plans and in compliance with regulatory requirements. GBIA is the second-busiest airport in China and a major international hub between Asia and Europe.

ANOMS (Airport Noise and Operations Management System), the world’s leading aircraft noise monitoring system, assists more than 220 airports around the world with their noise abatement processes and community outreach efforts. GBIA will deploy 22 noise monitoring terminals, weather integration and air traffic control recording. 


 

MICROSOFT BREAKS RECORD FOR QUIETEST PLACE ON EARTH

Microsoft® has broken a Guinness World Record to be officially recognized as home of the quietest room on Earth, because it beat the standing record of minus 13 dB(A).

Anechoic chambers are special rooms containing sound-absorbing and sound attenuating material in the walls, ceiling and floor, and it is designed to absorb 99.99% of the sound and ensuring the space free from echoes. Tests were carried out with the assistance from measurement expert of B&K, which provided Microsoft with instrumentation and analysis software to assess the room.

B&K used a special, two-microphone coherent power measurement technique to achieve the extraordinarily low ambient noise level measurement.



EUROFIGHTER PROJECT TO MINIMISE NOISE NEAR AIRPORTS

B&K and Airbus have entered into a cooperation to calculate the on-ground acoustic exposure of the Eurofighter.

The research project aims to perfect a complex software model of the fighter jet’s acoustic emissions when landing or taking off. The purpose will be to plan take-off and landing flight paths that generate minimal acoustic disturbance for the local communities around airports.The model will support accurate estimation of the noise radiated in all directions. This will enable Airbus Defence & Space to design low-noise flight paths. B&K will contribute to the project with its specialist knowledge, data acquisition equipment, and software. Airbus Defence & Space will use the detailed data to update and validate their Eurofighter noise models, and will subsequently incorporate this information into the software model to compute noise optimized take-off and landing profiles.



REFORM OF WIND FARM NOISE-LIMIT REGULATION - FINLAND

On August 27 the Finnish Government issued a decree on setting noise limits for wind farm. Before this decree there were no specific rules regarding noise limits for wind farm. The new directive established that the limits of the noise level are 40 dB overnight and 45 dB during the day (in residential areas). The regulation will be applicable to future amendments to environmental permission applications and in evaluating the need for such applications for wind farms already operating on the basis of building permissions.



CEFAS lENDS DEVELOPMENT OF UNDERWATER NOISE MONITORING NETWORK

The rising levels of underwater noise pollutions worldwide cause a negative impact in marine life by interfering with communication, causing changes in behaviour and raising stress.

The UK has taken part to the EU Directive for the achievement of a good environmental status in the European seas, by 2020 (Marine Strategy Framework Directive). Therefore, underwater noise is the focus of a new UK-wide research partnership between CEFAS, Marine Scotland Science and the University of Exeter to analyse underwater noise data recorded by some sub-seas around the UK coast. The fact to obtain information about the marine soundscape help to improve the understanding of the underwater noise and help to advise how manage human activities in the sea.


 

MEASUREMENT PARTNER TRANSFORM ACOUSTICAL CONSULTING

The B&K Measurement Partners Software has undergone considerable growth and an update. It now provides solutions that support customers of sound level meters through every step of the sound measurement process.

New features include: an application for smartphones, a learning centre and an online community. The application is free and controls the sound level meters without disturbing the sound field. Therefore, Measurement Partners provides solutions that simplify the processes of measuring end-to-end, through increased efficiency and productivity, helping users to get very accurate measurements.
 

 

The B&K Predictor - LimA noise mapping and prediction Software now can automatically calculates noise barriers efficiency to identify inadequate barrier performance. This is easier for the Acoustics Experts to identify the most effective noise barrier for a specific location. The Automatic Calculation which shows differences between the impact of different noise barriers has been simplified and the software’s efficiency calculation is very useful for different variety of noise barriers.
 

 
A PROFESSIONAL SOLUTION AT A "STUDENT" RATE

The offering from BridgeNet is Flight 3D, which works with WebTrak, so it makes easier for users to get some information, such as noise for example. The expectation from this partnership is to spark new innovations and strengthen of B&K’s ability to help airport keep and grow their business.
 

 
MULTIPLE MEASUREMENT ON THE MOVE

B&K has created Type 4529-B, a new robust Triaxial Accelerometers for vibration measurement in harsh industrial environments. This has been designed as a replacement for Type 4506. Type 4529-B is suitable for use a variety of application. It has a single-axis power supply, that’s mean more flexibility. Moreover it has a range of mounting surfaces and a selection of clips. The 4529 family has a much tougher design and wider frequency range.
 

 

Aerospace leader Lockheed Martin has expanded its vibration measurement capabilities for testing satellite systems, with a 450-channel PULSE TM vibro-acoustic data acquisition system. Supplied by B&K, the system is based on our standard, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) PULSE LAN-XI Data Acquisition Hardware.

The modular hardware allows individual modules to be used freely, as standalone front-ends or collectively in framebased configurations, making it suitable for testing large structures such as satellites and spacecraft. The system’s self-test and verification tools are dedicated to high channel-count systems, ensuring reliable performance even in the most complex configurations. The system also provides a dedicated, streamlined workflow to simplify system setup, data recording, monitoring, and post-processing analysis.
